TEPPEN (stylized TEPPƎN officially) is a card battle strategy video game developed by Capcom and GungHo Entertainment for iOS and Android, released in 2019. A major crossover game featuring characters from several Capcom franchises.
A fast-paced 1-on-1 card battle game, in TEPPEN players create a deck of 30 cards and select one of several playable characters, called Heroes. Cards come in two types: Unit Cards which represent a character and can be placed on the field, and Action Cards which are similar to spell cards. Each player starts out with 30 HP, and must place cards in one of 3 slots in the battlefield, after which a strike line starts moving forward. If the opposing player doesn't place a card in its path, they incur direct damage to their HP. Cards have different effects and abilities that can be activated during battle, providing a large number of unique play styles and strategies, and each Hero has three possible Hero Arts the player can choose, providing their own unique skills to the deck. Battles end once one of the players loses all HP, gives up or the timer runs out.
Following its 32nd expansion release, "Eternal Heroes", it was announced that TEPPEN will end service on March 30, 2026. An offline update will be available from that date up to April 29, allowing players to continue playing TEPPEN offline against bots.
Story & Characters
The game's story is set in its own unique post-apocalyptic world where all represented Capcom franchises coexist, and initially focused on each playable hero's journey to the "Land of Illusion", a mysterious land where they are told what they seek can be found. Most stories feature a mysterious figure leading them along, later revealed to be Ada Wong from Resident Evil. The plot is presented through art-based prologue stories for each Hero and by reading the "Flavor Text" present in all cards.
There are 16 unique playable Heroes, the first eight came out with the game and the others were added through "Expansion" updates. Each Hero represents one of four color decks (Red, Green, Purple, Black) and have three selectable "Hero Arts", abilities that can be used during battle. Note that not all franchises in the game have a Hero representing them.
Each Hero has a number of Skins available. Normal Skins are simple recolors with no gameplay or design change, while EX Skins alter the Hero's appearance and voiced lines, and change the Hero Arts' names and animations while keeping their effects the same. EX Skins can also change a Hero into a completely separate character, often one from another franchise, but the Hero Arts still retain the effects of the original.

Hiryu was added to the game as part of the 25th expansion, Absolute Zero, as an EX Skin of Rathalos. He became available on January 5, 2024 as a rare gacha pull in the 4.5 Year Anniversary Pack 1. Hiryu joins the roster nearly 2 years after the series was introduced in the game's 8th expansion. As all other elements representing the series, Hiryu appears in his modern design from the 2014 Strider, although curiously with no kanji drawn on his chest plate.
Hiryu's three Hero Arts are based on moves from the Marvel vs. Capcom series, each one having the same effect as one of Rathalos' Hero Arts:
| Hero Art | Name | Effect |
|---|---|---|
|
There's no escape...Legion! 跳べ!レギオン! Jump in! Legion! |
Give all friendly units +2 Attack and <Crush> (13 seconds). |
|
Time to end this! Ragnarok! 邪魔だ! ラグナロク! You're in the way! Ragnarok! |
Give 1 friendly unit <Flight> and +X Attack, where X is the number of times Action Cards were used to increase a unit's Attack. (Maximum value for X is 3.) |
|
Try stopping this! Formation! いくぞ! フォーメーション! Let's Go! Formation! |
Give 1 friendly unit +2 HP, <Shield>, and <Anti-Air>. |
Theme
Hiryu's character theme is a new remixed version of "Raid!", based on the rendition from the 2014 Strider, titled "Theme of Strider -TEPPEN Version-".

Cards
All cards in TEPPEN are grouped in one of four colors (red, green, purple, black). Unit Cards have three values: MP (top, indicates summoning cost), Attack (bottom top, indicates damage dealt to other cards or the player's LP) and HP (bottom, indicates how many hits it takes before being destroyed), and are categorized in one of several "tribes" based on their nature (Human, Creature, Monster, Machine, etc.). Action cards, on the other hand, only have an MP value as they are exclusively used to cast effects during battle.
A Dark Agenda
The 8th expansion upgrade for TEPPEN released March 1, 2021. It saw the Strider series added to the game as one of its represented franchises. Features a total of 10 Strider cards.

Eternal Heroes
The 32nd and final expansion upgrade for TEPPEN released October 1, 2025; a direct follow-up to the previous expansion, World Domination. In response to the appearance of villains in the previous chapter, several heroes from many Capcom games appear to fight back the corruption caused by M. Bison and the goddess Myria (from Breath of Fire). Hiryu stands among the heroes fighting back, presented in a new Unit card and together with Hayato Kanzaki from Star Gladiator in an Action Card.
Adventure Mode
A single player mode introduced in the August 2022 update. In Adventure Mode, players can choose a campaign based on each Hero (called Memory Quests) or based on expansions and events (Event quest, which are offered for a limited time). Each quest provides a predetermined deck to face a number of AI opponents over a Map screen. Maps have several paths connecting tiles together, each tile holding an enemy character represented by a Hero, an Ex Skin or by a card artwork. Enemies and bosses have their own predetermined deck and a number of abilities, and provide rewards upon defeat. There are also Relics, special items gained during the mode that apply special effects to the deck when used.
Hiryu first appeared as the Boss tile in the New Year campaign "A New Year Begins - Fireworks" in December 2023, debuting a few weeks before he became available as an Ex Skin in January 2024. He uses the Legion Hero Art and a deck titled "Trajectory of Light", and has 50 initial HP while giving the player a starting 20 AP. Hiryu from Strider 2 (represented by the art from "Deadly Ninja Hiryu" appears as an enemy character in the Metal Suit Mafia campaign. He uses a Deck titled "Special A-Class Sacrifice Deck" and has 45 initial HP. He also uses "Kazakh Theme" as his background music instead of the EX Skin's theme.
A relic based on the artwork from "Deadly Ninja Hiryu" was introduced in the "Metal Suit Mafia" campaign.
Soul Shop
The Soul Shop is an in-game store added to the game during the April 2021 update, a feature where players can buy items (including character skins, music, player icons) in exchange of "Souls", an in-game currency obtained by playing Missions and Ranked Battles, among other methods.
During a Black Friday sale in November 2021 the store offered "Kazakh Theme" from Strider (2014) as a Limited-Time BGM for 4000 Souls (20% discount). The theme was available only from November 25 to November 30. The music theme returned for a "Cyber November" event in 2022, available from November 8 to November 30. As part of the Metal Suit Mafia expansion, the Strider 2 theme "Pursue the Flying Battleship Balrog 2" was included in the Soul Shop, for a limited time from December 26, 2024 to February 2, 2025.
The "Black Friday Jewel Set" item pack also contained a Player Icon of Hiryu's face from the card "Collapse of Negotiations". A second player icon was later made available through Adventure Mode.
Other references
All cards thus far (except for the set introduced in Metal Suit Mafia) are based on designs and situations from the 2014 Strider.
- The background in the art for "ADA 016 - Light Sword: Cypher" appears to be set in Kazakh City. The backgroudn in the Option A card is set in the Industry section of the city.
- The artwork for "ADA 081 - Solo" is based on Solo's intro cutscene before fighting Hiryu for the first time. Its secret animated card shows him flying through his boss room at the top of the Military Ring's fortress.
- The card "Mortal Enemies" has Hiryu facing Solo ZN-2, the form Solo takes following his first defeat and resurrection.
- Option C's card, unlike the other two Options, shows it performing the Eagle Flight skill instead of its normal attack.
- The art on "DTL 045 - Tong Pooh" has her striking her idle stance from the game.
- The ability of "DTL 52 - Arch-Assassin Xi Wang Mu" to explore for Option B is a reference to one of Xi Wang Mu's attacks, where she transforms into a purple energy panther that works the same as Hiryu's Option B attack.
- When performing the ability of "S. A-Class Strider Hiryu", two blade effects based on Hiryu's Cypher Attack and a small Option-C effect appear on screen.
- The names of Hiryu's Hero Arts are the lines he speaks when performing the moves in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
- Although named Formation, the animation for Hiryu's 3rd Hero Art doesn't represent any of the Formation moves from Marvel vs. Capcom, instead representing Option A's protective shield from the 2014 Strider.
